A short, sweet novella.
Ryan Hunter’s parties are legend. And tonight she’s going to be there.
Liza Matthews anticipates the return of her best friend and only love since kindergarten from soccer camp. But when Tony finally shows up, his mind is more focused on another girl. And worse, she’s a soccer player. Fighting for the attention Liza craves, she’s just a hairbreadth away from making a very stupid decision. But when extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures, she’s prepared to play ball to get her man.
The tryouts are hell, the first match ends bloody, and the morning after the selection party she wakes up in the worst place possible—in the arms of the captain of the soccer team. The hottest guy in school. Ryan Hunter.
I like that this story is narrated by Liza. It helps me understand why she’s always thought she loves her best friend, Tony, and believed that Tony would some day declare and return her love. Because Liza has never paid much attention to other boys, she doesn’t know Ryan, the captain of the soccer team, has been having a crush on her for a long time. It’s interesting to see how Liza gradually learns about what she truly wants and when she finally realizes where her heart belongs, I’m so happy for her. This novella is fun and cute, and I had a great time reading it. I’ll definitely pick up Ryan Hunter as I’m curious to find out what’s going on inside Ryan’s head when he challenges Liza to play soccer. If you love YA contemporary romance, don’t miss this Grover Beach Team series!
I really liked this novella!
And when I got approved to be on the blog tour, I thought it would be fun for us to read something directly from the main character, Liza Matthews.
So, today… I’m proud to present Liza Matthews. 🙂
She is going to share something she has never shared with anyone before.
I hope you’ll like the guest post.
2 Things Nobody Should Know About Me
by Liza Matthews
Well, for one, I think it’s majorly unfair to make me talk about something that no one should know, and two, I don’t have secrets. 😛
Well, maybe I have one…or two. But I’ll only tell you if you promise never, ever, ever to tell this to either Tony or Ryan. Pinky swear, guys, or my lips stay sealed.
Okay. So one day, and that was a very long time ago, I was waiting for Tony in his room while he went downstairs to get us some popcorn before we started watching a film. He’d changed his T-shirt only minutes before, and it now hung over the backrest of his chair. I couldn’t resist to grab it and sniff at the fabric. He smelled so good and I never got enough of his scent. Suddenly I had an idea. Okay, it wasn’t my best idea ever, but I decided to steal his tee. He had so many of them, he could do without that one—even if it was his favorite. And I knew, later he wouldn’t remember where he’d put it anyway.
I shoved it into my bag and took it home with me after watching the film. Every night then, I fell asleep breathing in that fabulous scent of Tony. Oh, it was fantastic…
Two days after that, Tony asked me if I remembered where he’d tossed his green T-shirt with the manga on it. I made an innocent face and shrugged. “How would I know where you dump your clothes?” I lied and got away with it.
What I didn’t think about at that time, though, was that Tony’s tee would soon lose his smell and take on my own if I hugged it to my chest every night. After a week, it was of no use any longer.
I sneaked the T-shirt back into his room, and when he didn’t pay attention, I pulled it out and swayed it in front of his eyes. “Is that the tee you were missing?” I asked him.
Tony beamed and hugged me. “Where did you find that?”
“Under your bed,” I croaked, short of air but genuinely enjoying his embrace. He even kissed my cheek then. That was well worth the lie. And until today, he never found out what really happened with his tee.
And the other thing you shouldn’t know is that I do this every other week with one of Ryan’s shirts. 😉
Nah, just joking. Well, no, I’m not, but I know you are dying to know one more secret, aren’t you?
So here’s something top secret and nobody must know just yet, because I hadn’t had a chance to tell my best friends, Susan, Sam, and Simone about it, and they really should be the first to know.
Ryan Hunter gave me a ring.
Nah, nah, not an engagement ring, guys. It’s a silver band with a small ruby heart in it. Do you want to know where he gave it to me?
It was yesterday in his garden. We went outside after dinner with his parents—I actually eat with them every other day now—and he grabbed my hand, pulling me down to the swing where he so often kissed me in the past. I really love that place. It’s always so romantic when he pulls me down on his lap and swings a little back and forth with me while we watch the sunset together. We talk about everything and anything then, or sometimes we don’t talk at all.
However, this time, he did all the talking. And it wasn’t much he said. He just placed the softest kiss on my neck and whispered in my ear, “Love you, Matthews.”
I usually kiss him back then and say, “I do, too.” But this time I merely replied, “I know.”
I can tell it every time he grabs my hand or strokes my cheek with the back of his fingers.
“I know you know,” he said then. “But I want you to always remember it. Forever. With this.” And then took my hand and slid the ring on my finger.
I only stared at his moving hands and murmured, “I don’t know what to say.”
“Then don’t say anything.” He shaped his hand against my cheek to turned my head toward him. “Just wear it. And every time you look at it, remember how happy I am with you.”
I actually look at that ring on my finger a lot. And it always puts a smile on my face. Now I have to tell my friends and show them my treasure. I swear they are going to freak out over this. 🙂
