Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets—and human lives.
In The Fiery Heart, Sydney risked everything to follow her gut, walking a dangerous line to keep her feelings hidden from the Alchemists.
Now in the aftermath of an event that ripped their world apart, Sydney and Adrian struggle to pick up the pieces and find their way back to each other. But first, they have to survive.
For Sydney, trapped and surrounded by adversaries, life becomes a daily struggle to hold on to her identity and the memories of those she loves. Meanwhile, Adrian clings to hope in the face of those who tell him Sydney is a lost cause, but the battle proves daunting as old demons and new temptations begin to seize hold of him. . . .
Their worst fears now a chilling reality, Sydney and Adrian face their darkest hour in this heart-pounding fifth installment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where all bets are off.
This series is getting more and more interesting!
Sydney continued to surprise me with her wits, as well as her determination to keep others from harm. Because of the choices she made in previous installments, she now must fight her way through the re-education that the Alchemists set up for those whom they believed were sinned. I knew the Alchemists had some really rigid beliefs but still, I wasn’t prepared for their brutality – they were just plain savage, callous and cruel! Sydney suffered a lot – physically, emotionally, mentally – and she was definitely changed because of what she had to endure.
Adrian was, you know… Adrian. His flaws were plenty but he’s still my most favorite character in the series. He was still fairly reckless in this installment but fortunately, he was very quick at improvising. It’s really sweet and fun to see him put things together to pamper Sydney and I liked that they both cared for each other in such a deep, loving way.
Things weren’t going at a breakneck speed in this book but there was never a dull moment. It’s great to finally get to know Sydney’s bigger sister and I could see why Sydney loved her so much. And while I loved a lot of things about this book, I had one issue: the immensity of power that Sydney and Adrian could wield seemed way too dramatic! Their power seemed way off-the-chart, and yes, those scenes were very, very exciting in a cinematic way but they just didn’t appeal to me – my mind simply couldn’t believe the duo could pull off something like that. Anyway, those scenes didn’t ruin my overall enjoyment but I thought I’d let you know. From what the ending implied, I think book six will be epic, not just epic epic, but EPIC! I can’t wait to get my hands on it when it becomes available.
