Millennia ago, he fell from heaven for her.
Can he face her without falling again?
Fascinated with ancient civilizations, seventeen-year-old Mia Crawford dreams of becoming an archaeologist. She also dreams of wings — soft and silent like snow — and somebody trying to steal them.
When a horrible creature appears out of thin air and attacks her, she knows Michael Fontaine is involved, though he claims to know nothing about it. Secretive and aloof, Michael evokes feelings in Mia that she doesn’t understand. Images of another time and place haunt her. She recognizes them — but not from any textbook.
In search of the truth, Mia discovers a past life of forbidden love, jealousy and revenge that tore an angel from Heaven and sent her to an early grave. Now that her soul has returned, does she have a chance at loving that angel again? Or will an age-old nemesis destroy them both?
Ancient history is only the beginning.
What would you do when you see an unconscious body lying on the ground?
The Watcher begins with Mia finding an unconscious body lying on the ground but before she could figure out what to do, unidentifiable shadow creatures started chasing her and instead of helping the unconscious person, she had to run for her life …
I really like the opening scene – it’s thrilling, haunting and mysterious. As the story unfolds, I find Mia facing one challenge after another. It’s definitely not an easy journey for Mia to go through but I’m glad that she learns a whole lot more about herself as well as the implication of her dreams as she endures the torments from the demons. Her friends are very nice people. Even when Mia seems to be acting a little weird, they still care for her and I really enjoy reading about the friendship that they have.
When two new boys, Michael and Damiel, show up at school, Mia feels drawn to Michael but Damiel seems to be very interested in trying to get her attention. I wouldn’t say there is a love triangle here (because Mia is not into Damiel) but with Michael holding back without giving her a good explanation, Mia feels rejected. I wouldn’t say Michael is an insensitive person (because he is not) but the way he treats Mia at the beginning is just … plain cold.
I like how things are revealed in the story. There is always something a little unexpected (but nothing confusing) happening, and while there are aspects that touch on topics like conscience and spirituality, I didn’t find the plot preachy. Probably because the souls of the main characters are fairly old (as in a few thousand years old), the conversations sometimes sound as though they were coming from sages instead of teenagers but strangely (and I mean this in a good way), I didn’t find that bothered me as I was reading the book.
What I found the most fascinating was the level of enjoyment that I had when I read the scene about Mia receiving an intuitive reading. Instead of finding the reading unrealistic or overly dramatized, I liked that it felt real and honest. It seems that Voisin knew the subject of intuition very well and I’m grateful that she shared her wealth of knowledge in the book.
With demons constantly lurking to strike, The Watcher offers a good dose of mystery with sword-wielding action and heartbreaking revelation. I had an enjoyable time reading this story and I look forward to reading more of Voisin’s work in the near future.
